Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has distanced itself from an alleged controversy over defamatory and derogatory slogans reportedly raised by certain individuals during a political rally at Anantnag Housing Colony. The party has clarified that such remarks do not represent its ideology, organisational principles or the official position of its leadership.

The clarification comes amid discussions over political conduct, public speech and accountability during political events. The BJP stated that it does not support any statement, slogan or expression that affects the dignity of an individual or goes against the principles of responsible political discourse.

Following directions from BJP General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul, Jammu and Kashmir BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur issued a statement explaining the party’s position on the controversy. The party maintained that its functioning is guided by democratic values, constitutional principles and issue-based politics. It emphasised that political workers and participants in public gatherings are expected to maintain discipline, restraint and respect while expressing their views.

The BJP reiterated that political differences should be addressed through democratic debate and policy discussions rather than through personal attacks or remarks that could be considered defamatory.

Individual Remarks Cannot Be Linked With Party Organisation: BJP

Addressing the allegations, BJP said that the slogans allegedly raised during the Anantnag rally should not be attributed to the party as an organisation. According to the party’s stand, if any individuals made such remarks, they reflected their personal opinions or emotions and cannot be considered the collective view of the BJP leadership or its organisational structure.

The party made it clear that it did not endorse defamatory, derogatory or disrespectful statements against any person and remains committed to maintaining political decorum during public programmes. While responding to the controversy, the BJP also highlighted its commitment towards protecting the dignity, honour and rights of women.

The party stated that women’s empowerment and increased participation in social, political and economic fields remain important aspects of its policy approach. It referred to initiatives aimed at strengthening women’s representation in public life. It also pointed towards the provision of 33 per cent reservation for women as a significant measure aimed at enhancing their participation in political institutions and promoting gender equality in decision-making processes.

The Jammu and Kashmir BJP reiterated that it will continue to work within the framework of constitutional values, democratic traditions and respectful political engagement. The party maintained that its focus remains on governance, public issues and policies aimed at strengthening participation of different sections of society.

The clarification comes at a time when political activities in Jammu and Kashmir continue to draw attention, with public rallies, political messaging and statements by leaders being closely monitored amid evolving political discussions.
