New Delhi . Indian cricket legend Sourav Ganguly has taken legal action against social media content that is allegedly damaging his reputation. He has lodged a written complaint at Thakurpukur police station in Kolkata alleging that efforts are being made to tarnish his image through some social media platforms. In the complaint, he has demanded legal action against the concerned individuals and groups under the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The focus of Ganguly’s complaint is a Facebook page, which is claimed to be operated in his name. According to the complaint, this page has a large number of followers and is presented as their official support forum. The former captain alleges that such posts are being shared through this platform, which are damaging to his personal and professional reputation. He says that due to these posts, there is a possibility of misconceptions about him among the common people.
The complaint also mentions that not only social media posts, but also some other online mediums have circulated misleading content. Ganguly has tried to show through the documents and digital evidence provided to the police that the material in question has been published with the intention of tarnishing his image. He has demanded a serious investigation into the matter and identification of the culprits.
In his application, Sourav Ganguly made it clear that he considers criticism as natural in public life and he has no objection to it. However, he also said that material that is factual, derogatory and damaging to reputation cannot be accepted in the name of freedom of expression. He believes that spreading false or misleading information with the aim of damaging the social and professional reputation of any person is a serious matter and action should be taken against it under the law.
Police officials have confirmed receiving the complaint. According to officials, a preliminary investigation into the matter has been initiated and the veracity of the allegations made in the complaint is being investigated. During the investigation, social media accounts, posts and technical aspects to them can also be examined. The police will try to find out who prepared the material in question and who played a role in its dissemination.
This matter has come to light at a time when Sourav Ganguly’s name had also come up in some political speculations and social media discussions in recent times. Some reports made claims about various political messages and contacts, which were later refuted by the parties concerned. Ganguly had publicly clarified that many things to him were not factually correct and had been misrepresented.
Amidst the increasing reach of social media in the digital age, this matter has once again become a topic of discussion regarding the accountability and credibility of the content broadcast on online platforms. Experts believe that legal protection in reputational matters is important for public personalities as well as ordinary citizens and effective monitoring of the spread of untrue content is necessary.
